Dario Ramirez, a human rights activist and exile from Venezuela, traveled to the Vatican for a visit with the pope, and he invited his girlfriend Maryangel Espinal.
Maryangel thought they would visit with the pope and his staff during a reception for Catholic legislators.
What she didn’t know was that Dario had asked a cardinal on the pope’s staff beforehand to accommodate a very special request.
Meeting the pope is memorable enough. But what happens in the video you’re about to watch is nothing short of amazing!
When the meeting begins, Dario and Maryangel are surrounded by a crowd of other delegates.
“When we were introduced to the Holy Father, I explained the situation in Venezuela and the situation facing political prisoners,” Dario recalled to the National Catholic Register.
“I then said to the Pope: ‘There’s a third thing I want to ask you.’ I explained to the Holy Father that the woman next to me is the woman of my life.”
At this point in the video, Maryangel is taken aback — and with good reason!
She initially thought the last thing Dario wanted to say to the pope was to ask for a selfie!
She couldn’t have been more wrong!
“I met her in church, God put her in my life, and I want to propose to her. So I got down on one knee and asked.”
